Okay,So, we have :

Entries eligible for 1st place => 40
Entries then eligible for 2nd place => 39
Entries eligible for 3rd place => 38

So, the total possibilities for the entries to finish as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be : 40 * 39 * 38 = 59,280 .
