It would have to be ideological differences. The U.S. though that the U.S. was a free capitalist nation. The Soviets were a totalitarian and socialist (or communist) nation. Why the other answers don't work: Religious differences: While one was a primarily atheist government (the Soviets) and the other was... umm... technically secular (the influence of religious did increase in the '50s), it is not the main cause of tension. Treaty of Versailles: That is from the First World War.
