Let A = {1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12}. The universal set is represented by U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12}. What is the smallest odd number in ~A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand what ~A means.

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

~A means "The complement of A" or "Not A"

Okay thanks!

Let C be the set of some of Charlie’s friends. C={Christian,Tyler,William,Ryan,Dylan} Let J be the set of some of Jenny’s friends. J={Abigail,Alyssa,Mia,Victoria,Natalie} Which of the following is NOT an element of C×J?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does that mean.. Idk why my teacher never went over this at the beginning of the year..

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Basically it means that:|dw:1399947326980:dw| For example: Y: {a, b, c, d} Z: {1, 2, 3} Find Y x Z Y x Z: {(a, 1), (a, 2), (a, 3), (b, 1), (b, 2), (b, 3), (c, 1), (c, 2), (c, 3), (d, 1), (d, 2), (d, 3)} There are 4 terms by 3 so there will be 12 terms in total. 4 * 3 = 12

Woahhh. That makes so much sense to me right now. I'm happy. Yay. EOC is Wednesday so thanks a lot!!!!!
