Start by finding the differences. step 2 - step 1 = ? step 3 - step 2 = ? Step 4 - step 3 = ? Is there a pattern or consistent number?

3-1= 2 6-3=3 10-6=4

It's going u by 1 constantly but how could you make that into a formula to find the 100th term

what she said

To do what I did above I would have to have every single term all the way up to 100 wouldn't I?

The problem starts with the top. 1 person would have 0 handshakes. There is no one to shake hands with.

The formula is for the total number of 1+2+3+...+n and this formula is (1/2)(n)(n+1), which is why at n=10, the sum is 55 and at n=100, the sum will be (1/2)(100)(101)= 5050
