why was Kansas called "Bleeding Kansas" in 1856

OpenStudy (blake4560):

Hello friend! I believe that it had something to do with a man whose name I believe was John Brown. He and some others which included a few family members went around stirring up people and killing in the name of "freedom". As I said, I think this was why ;but not 100% sure.

because of popular sovereignty and all the outbreaks between Kansas and Nebraska (border ruffians) there was a newspaper made that gave the name bleeding Kansas
