OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

The table below represents a linear function f(x) and the equation represents a function g(x): x f(x) -1 -9 0 -1 1 7 g(x) g(x) = 3x - 2 Part A: Write a sentence to compare the slope of the two functions and show the steps you used to determine the slope of f(x) and g(x). (6 points) Part B: Which function has a greater y-intercept? Justify your answer. (4 points)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Both functions are linear. I'd suggest you immediately graph both of them, so that you have something visual to compare.

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

is that good?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Very neat! You'll need to graph both functions to compare them. g(x) = 3x - 2 has a slope of 3 and a y-intercept of -2. Can you quickly sketch this line, based upon that info? The other function can be graphed simply by swiping the x- and y-coordinates of the given points on the same set of axes as those you use to graph f(x) = 3x - 2. Draw a line through those points after you've graphed them.

You can graph 'g(x) = 3x - 2' here: https://www.desmos.com/calculator

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@greenlegodude57 : True, but wouldn't it be helpful for each of us to learn to graph lines by ourselves for those times when we don't have access to the Internet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmale Oh, really? Well I attend the same online school @geekfromthefutur does, and the teacher's recommend that graphing site.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmale If we don't have internet, we wouldn't be able to do our ONLINE school.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Great, and great. But old fashioned skills such as graphing points and lines by hand still do come in handy. Believe it or not, there are still situations where you'd have NO access to the Internet. Try the middle of Nevada.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geekfromthefutur Yes, that is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you have NO access to the internet, then he wouldn't be on Open Study..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geekfromthefutur You go up 2, go right 0.667. Rise = 2, Run = 0.667 Rise/Run 2/0.667 So slope is approximately 3 for 'g(x) = 3x - 2'.
