3(x+2)=x-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you distribute the 3 to (x+2) what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I'm trying to help my son and can't remember what I am doing. 3x+6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry to sound so uneducated, but when you go back to double check I would have thought that you would come up with 42=-1. I understand how you got the answer but why am I not seeing the whole picture here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops 27=-1

OpenStudy (mayaal):

Wait do u have to solve for x...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. sorry

OpenStudy (mayaal):

Then the one I did is correct... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you for your help

OpenStudy (mayaal):

ur welcome...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3(x+2)=x-8 3x+6=x-8 3x-x=-8-6 2x=-14 x=-7

OpenStudy (mayaal):

3x+6=x-8 2x=-14 x=-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thank you both. That makes sense now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if we have 3(x+2)=2x 3x+6=2x then x+6 how dow you figure x?

OpenStudy (mayaal):

3x+6=2x 6=-x -6=x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much. How do I know which way to go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesn't matter which way you go, you just have to end with positive x= something.
