1. Russia still powerful and now interested in expansion to old borders, as indicated by take-over of Georgia, the Crimea, and soon Eastern Ukraine. Communism is softer form, socialism, still influences most other European nations.

2. and 3. I don't really know. Sorry.

to answer #3, Many other places have converted to using different energy resources, like wind farms, and hyrdo. They convert sugar cane into "ethanol" gas. ETC. Since the lack of fossil fuels, they have to use other sources.
