12 is 4% of what number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Break the problem down... so 12 x 4% (.04) = x

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

if 4% or .04 times some number "x" = 12....we will have \[\large 12 = .04x\] which means to solve for 'x' we have \[\large x = \frac{12}{.04}\]

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

@jtryon that would be correct if you were seeing what 4% of 12 is.....because for that you would indeed have \[\large 12 \times .04 = x\] however this is 4% of some number = 12

if it is easier, set it up as a proportion so you have... |dw:1400082471842:dw|
