After the war the US experienced a Baby Boom. There was more interest in marriage and family. Women's college opportunity remained about the same. With most of the men gone, the war production industry's had to hire women to do the jobs required to build up the military. And they didn't have to pay them as much as men. Think Rosey the Riveter here.
