Why did Reagan support rebellions in Afghanistan, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Grenada?

weaken the soviet union

..weaken the Soviet Union. This was largely the main focus of his support. All of those nations had Communist elements supported by the Soviets and Reagan wanted to confront them at every turn in order to limit their influence. Reagan has often been called the Great Communicator for getting his ideas across, but he could also be a pretty aggressive guy when the situation called for it -- hence one of his nicknames, "Ronny Raygun" (which was probably more for his Space Defense Initiative, but it still fit). 1. weaken the soviet union 2. reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world 3. negotiate with terrorist 4. unification of east and west germany 5. reagan supported a massive arms build up that hastened the collapse of the soviet economy.

Proxy wars were a big part of the Cold War. The United States and Soviet Union hosted a number of them throughout the world in order to vie for influence in these regions, and prevent the other side from gaining influence. In the case of El Salvador, Reagan did not support a rebellion but a democratic government elected in 1984.
