Why was Five Forks such an important strategic position for Lee and his army?

It was his rail link with the rest of the Confederacy.When the Union troops captured Five Forks, Lee had to abandon his position at Petersburg. It was the end of the long siege, and Lee fled West, to be stopped at Appomattox, where he surrendered.
