Well, one obvious issue is the fear that advancing technology and rapid industrialization -- a prominent feature of the Victorian Era -- would corrupt humanity, and lead people to do monstrous things. This is also a theme struck in "Frankenstein" and several of Jules Verne's stories, and you can see its modern echo in the fretting people do over video games and the Internet.
