Each quotation below contains a figure of speech. Type the exact words that make up the figure. Then type s for simile, m for metaphor, or p for personification. 1..". . . motionless as a cloud the . . . man stood . . ." 2.. ". . . to run over better waters the little vessel of my genius hoists its sails."
I'd say the first one is a simile. And the second is personification.
Simile is correct as it compares the motion of a cloud to a man. Personification is correct as it gives the "little vessel" the human characteristic "running" or "to run." Descriptions: Simile: a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ). Metaphor: A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
