Which sentence uses a verb that agrees with its subject? A. Rays of sunshine peeks through purple clouds on the horizon. B. The money for next week's trip are in the envelope. C. An assortment of vegetables were piled on Mary's plate. D. The recipients of the citizenship award are Mrs. Banks and Mr. Cook.

C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's D, because if you take away "of the citizenship award", which is what is called a prepositional phrase (they add mostly unneeded details to jazz up sentences), you see "The recipients ARE". If you read that out loud, it should ring a bell. It would not be C, because "An assortment WERE" sounds wrong (because it is)
