If you look at the options and put the subject and the verb together, like for example with B, the subject is "A yellow cake" and the verb is "are", so "A yellow cake ARE" doesn't fit because are is plural. But with option A, if you take out "at the library," it's "Students are meeting to study", which is right. "Students" is plural, so "are" is the right word to follow. :)
