Evaluate. Pay close attention to all brackets and signs. |4| - |-5| A. 9 B. 1 C. -9 D. -1 Please Help

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Do yo know what |-5| means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that's the problem

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

In this case, it's no longer the ceiling or floor functions. Here you have plain old good "absolute value."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so the absolute value of 4 minus the absolute value of -5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Think of the absolute value as the distance a number is from zero on the number line. A distance is positive or zero, but not negative. For example, 3 is 3 units from zero, so |3| = 3 -3 is also 3 units from zero, so |-3| = 3.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes.
