OpenStudy (linn99123):

What is the surface area of the figure? A. 574 cm2 B. 427 cm2 C. 287 cm2 D. 504 cm2 http://static.k12.com/calms_media/media/1299500_1300000/1299602/1/631208c04b6363c5d4dee7f4e9e981ac9e220ba4/143847.jpg

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Area of the "top" 14 by 7 = 98 PLUS 7 by 7 = 49 equals 147 centimeters

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

square centimeters actually

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Geez I got bounced and lost a HUGE chunk of my calculations. ARRGGGHHHH!! Area of BOTTOM = 147 Side = 14 * 5 = 70 PLUS 14 * 5 = 70 PLUS 5 * 7 = 35 PLUS 5 * 7 = 35 PLUS 5 * 7 = 35 245 sq cm SIDE TOTAL plus 147 TOP plus 147 BOTTOM = 539 sq cm total

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Plus one more 5 * 7 = 35 Corrected total = 574 sq cm Well, if I have multiplied and added correctly it seems the answer is A.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes, I am getting A too: 2( 14^2 - 7^2 + 14*5 + 14*5 ) = 574 cm^2.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Okay ranga - I'm glad SOMEBODY got the same answer!! Seems you took the more elegant solution. (Computing the whole area then subtracting what doesn't belong).

OpenStudy (ranga):

You are welcome wolf.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Thanks :-)
