In discussion what is meant by the EMF of a battery, Alf claims that a battery only has EMF when connected in a circuit, as otherwise the charges are not moving and therefore have no energy. Bert, on the other hand, claims that the EMF is greater when the battery is not connected as the charges are not losing energy as they move through it. They are both wrong. Why?
