How do you solve a matrix?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you mean, how do you solve a matrix equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, right now were learning about matrices and I have no idea how to solve them.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

\(Ax=b\) you augment you matrix \(A\) with \(b\) then row reduce or left multiply \(b\) with \(A^{-1}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I showed you some of the matrices I'm working on could you help me solve them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can I see a problem to see if it's the same thing were doing ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure give me a minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here are some of the matrix I'm working on.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmm, i forgot about augmenting ... abstract algebra ruined it for me :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 Can you help me solve those matrix I just posted?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

for the second one, you have any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure on any of them.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Do you know how to the inverse of a 2x2 matrix?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i am, i just need to assess your thoughts. this type of stuff requires you to do the thinking, i can correct come bad ideas if they come up. #1 can be determined by trial and error #2 is rather basic relating the structure of systems to matrixes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

#3 is just application

OpenStudy (amistre64):

#3,4,5 are just applicaitons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I do not. @zzr0ck3r

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 I don't know how to solve any of them.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then its beyond the scope of my abilities since you would need to have some basic idea of the fundamentals things that are going on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really, Is there any way you can help me solve these. I need to have a basic idea how to get the answer.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you have no idea and you just found these questions lying in a ditch and rushed them here to see if they could be saved .. well, they exist in the context of previous work.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

saying you have no idea what to do amounts to you simply saying you have no prior knowledge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually these are some practice questions for my math class.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sorry, but theres not enough time at the moment to go over all the fundamentals. good luck zz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zzr0ck3r is there any way you could help me solve these problems.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

for a system \(a_0x+b_0y+c_0y=d_0\\a_1x+b_1y+c_1z=d_1\\a_2x+b_2y+c_2z=d_2\) we get the matrix equation \(\bigl( \begin{smallmatrix} a_0 & b_0 & c_0\\ a_1 & b_1 & c_1 \\ a_2 & b_2 & c_2 \end{smallmatrix} \bigr)\)\(\bigl( \begin{smallmatrix} x \\ y\\ z\\ \end{smallmatrix} \bigr)\)\(=\bigl( \begin{smallmatrix} d_0\\ d_1 \\ d_2 \end{smallmatrix} \bigr)\)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so what is the answer to the second one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm thinking its either B or C.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

dont guess....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really don't know. I'm thinking its either B or C I'm not 100% sure.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you are right, look at the first row of the matrix, and look at the first row of the equations it gave you, what is the value on y?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

yes what is the number next to y in the first equation?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Problem 2 the very first time you see a y what is the number next to it?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I really think that you are way behind and I am not going to be able to help. I will not just give the answers but at this rate it will take us 10 hours to do all these problems. Each problem you posted has a different method to solve, and each one takes quite a bit of knowledge about the subject. Go read the book, this question 2 was covered in the first or second day of class....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am behind with my math class. I'm trying to get caught up.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

read the book

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zzr0ck3r Can you at least tell me for #2 weather it's B or C.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

the first equation in your system is 2y + 7z = -3 this is the same thing as 0x+2y+7z = -3 (your equations are in x,y,z this one just has a 0 as the coefficient on x) so 0x+2y+7z=-3 we are looking for an matrix where one of the rows are (0 2 7) and that row corresponds to being equal to -3

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

what is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you are just guessing...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How was that a guess.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

if you cant answer what matrix has a 2 in the first collumn you shuold drop your class

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm already In semester B. I'm required to take this class to graduate high school.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

there is one matrix with the row 0 2 7 \(\huge C\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh OK, Thanks @zzr0ck3r

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey @melissaaaa are the problems I posted above anything like what you are learning about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.ehow.com/how_4557439_solve-matrix.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@destineeswagga thanks for the link. By chance, Do you know the answers for the problems I posted (1, 3-5)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not good at math sorry ;/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Neither am I anymore. Thanks anyway @destineeswagga

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero Can you help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I was taking an exam do you still need help ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@melissaaaa If you could help me still that would be great. I got the answers for the problems I posted above, but I still need some more help.
