Solve for x: |x| − 8 = −5
Do you know how to balance an equation?
Yes.
Alright well get x on one side by removing the -8
-5+8?
yes
combine both of those you add 8 to both sides making it positive 3
But can't the x also equal 13?
its the absolute value of x not the absolute value of the 8
So which one is it?
x = −13 and x = −3 x = 3 and x = −3 x = 3 and x = 13 No solution
first get it into this form \(|a| = b\) then you have two equations \(a=b\) and \(-a=b\)
\(|x|-8=-5\implies|x|=3\implies x = 3, \text{ or } x = -3\)
well okay there u go then
Alright, a couple more. Here...
If you guys can please help with this, I just wanna make srue I understand. Solve for x: -3|x + 7| = -12
Wait, so no matter what I need to answer the answer always has to equal -12 there?
first get it into this form \(|x|= \text{something}\)
Alright, then what?
It would be |X+7| = -4
its the absolute value of x+7. which ix x+7 = -4 and x - 7 = -4. solve for both.
x = -3 and -11?
I mean, that's at least what I'm thinking it would be.
Does anyone here know Chemistry? I just need a little help on a question.
\[|x+7|=-4 \rightarrow There \quad are \quad NO \quad Solutions.\]
Sorry, these are the choices x = 5 over 3, x = −19 over 3 x = −3, x = −11 x = −3, x = 11 No solution
