When electrons are no longer contained in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus, the atom is a(n)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gas. plasma. ion. molecule.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A gas's atoms stil retain all of their electrons. Molecules are atoms that are bound together through the exchange for sharing of electrons. A plasma can be considered an ionized gas, which implies that a plasma has more than one atom in it. An ion is an atom that has lost some electrons. Given those statements, what do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That should read "through the exchange or sharing of electrons."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an ion?

@PsiSquared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, an ion is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Note that an atom can still retain electrons and be an ion. In fact for the vast majority of elements, it would take significant amount of energy to strip all of their electrons away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will do
