Okay so The American Dream was/is the idea that no matter what your background is, if you work hard enough you can be as rich or whatever as you want, right? So then Fitzgerald has the great gatsby rising up from Queens to this troubled stock broker, so i would say badly :) because even though through all of this the American Dream is accomplished he is still as or even more unhappy than he was in the first place.
