The mood of this paragraph is dark, cold, and dreary. Parts of the paragraph such as "old and crumbled" and even "it was still dark outside" support this, showing that the overall mood of the area is uncomfortable and dark. When you read this passage, you do feel rather gloomy as the character must have.
