what is math

OpenStudy (jlg030597):

really your joking right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This cannot be a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mathematics is the study of topics such as quantity, structure, space, and change. There is a range of views among mathematicians and philosophers as to the exact scope and definition of mathematics

OpenStudy (jlg030597):

this is something id hear a k5 student say.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wonder if it was a joke question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a legit question which can be taken in depth, and from the comments above you people aren't really welcoming to a new person, maybe learn some respect then comment on somebodies post. Here is a link where you can learn about all aspects of math http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

very funy niko

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I agree it is a legit question, just not one I thought would pop up because the answer is really broad...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is too much variance on "what math is" because what it is to one person could be different for another.

OpenStudy (kainui):

Math is something between an invention of the human mind and discovering fundamental truths. It's like seeing some sheep in a field an seeing fingers on a hand and noticing that there is this abstract thing called five-ness and we recognize this and although there might be 5 sheep there and 5 fingers on your hand you're kind of like separating "the five" from the sheep and the fingers. Kinda weird, it's sort of like language. Then we can manipulate this stuff around like they're magic runes and we actually use these symbols to see into the future to varying approximations of accuracy depending on how simple of a thing we're curious about and this is what physics is. It sort of relies on the idea that we exist in a consistent reality, but since we've never been much further outside of our universe than earth it's really quite hard to say what that means. You can sort of zoom in infinitely and zoom out infinitely and notice that certain things seem to change drastically according to modern cosmology and quantum mechanics. But it's all connected in some sense, and always changing... Ooooh sounds like Buddhism, but it's really not. Or is it? In some sense it doesn't matter if we understand math or reality to any degree because in the end we ARE IT and we are IN IT always, it's inescapable. So yeah, idk, but math is like super mega kewl yo.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then you have to ask yourself, how do you quantify the answer? is there really one true answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Math to me is the study of quantities, sets, relationships, patterns, numbers, groupings, and it encompasses so many things.
