how to locate root 5.8 on a number line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok 1st check the number u have is between which to perfect square no's here 5.8 between 4 & 9 so the sqrt(5.8) will be between 2 & 3.To be more precise the no is 1.8 distance from 4 and 3.2 distance from 9 so the sqrt(5.8) will lie closer to 2.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Approximate the root and then do it just like you would do any other number.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\[\sqrt{5.8}=± 2.4\] -2.4 0 +2.4 <──────*──────────*──────────*────────>
