But my lesson says this and Jamaica says nothing about the Spanish crown... ----- Puerto Rico In 1865, Puerto Rico was still a colony of Spain. During this year, a commission suggested many different reforms for the government. However, before any reforms could be made, the commission stated the slavery must be abolished. The government was shocked by this report. Also, a growing rebellious attitude among the people alarmed the government. Soon some people staged a revolt that was quickly suppressed. However, at that time, Cuba was also struggling for independence. The unstable situation in both of these countries caused the Spanish government to grant some reforms. Spain abolished slavery and allowed Puerto Rico to have a constitutional government. Jamaica During the 1920s, the people of Jamaica became increasingly dissatisfied with British rule. As a result, they proposed several government reforms. When the Great Depression hit in the 1930s, the people's unrest grew and rioting broke out. To deal with this crisis, Jamaicans formed their first labor unions and continued to demand more of a voice in the government. In 1944, the government set up a House of Representatives. All of Jamaica's citizens had the right to vote for the members of this body. Also, the government formed a Legislative Council and an Executive Council. By doing this, Jamaica created a bicameral system that is influenced by the British parliamentary system. Today, Jamaica has a parliament with a Senate and House of Representatives.
