Bilbo's mixed feelings are the result of opposing character traits within him: part of Bilbo's heritage comes from the adventurous Took family and part from the more settled Bagginses. Besides Gandalf, Bilbo is the only character in the party who understands the importance of acting wisely. So when Gandalf leaves the group, the others look to Bilbo for leadership.
