One way of looking at it is to just see that the distance from a to b is just (b-a) right? Just look at that picture to see that if you subtract off a from b you will indeed just get that length between the two values.

Now take that and divide it by 2, since that will be half the distance between the difference of them right? However this is only the distance between a and b. If we just say that's our answer it'll be wrong. |dw:1400540317968:dw| So we have to add that on to the shorter length, a and you will have your answer.

The other way of thinking about it is to just take the average of a+b.
