I'll tell you about activity 1. 

For step 4, number 1, just look at the length of the line segment between the point and the chord of the circle. That's the shortest distance, assuming that the chord is perpendicular to the segment.The chord must be perpendicular in order for you to find the shortest distance.

If you had tried to measure the chords, you would realize that the length are congruent.

I'll leave number 3 for you to work out on your own now.
