the atomic number number represents the number of protons of a atom and also electrons when the atom is neutral.
the mass of a neutron and proton are almost same.mass of one proton or neutron is considered to be one atomic mass unit.therefore atomic mass represents the mass of an atom which is equal to the sum of masses neuron and proton present in the atom.
