2x^4-3x^3-16x-24 there are 4 terms, so we want to break them up into groups of 2 2x^4-3x^3 and -16x-24 2x^4-3x^3 becomes x^3(2x-3) -16x-24 becomes -8(2x+3) bring them back together x^3(2x-3)-8(2x+3)
