how do you measure the distance between a point and a line?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

you would find the perpendicular distance if you know the line and the point its \[d = \frac {\left| ax_{1} + by_{1} + c \right|}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}\] where the line is in the form ax + by + c = 0 and the point is \[(x_{1}, y_{1})\] hope it helps

Thanks :)
