To best understand a poets message you should rely on your memory. Read the poem a few times to completely understand it. Then break it down verse by verse, or stanza by stanza. Your memory from reading the poem and understanding it will point out the message the poem contains. (Sorry for late response, my internet is being slow because of the storm outside.)
