PLEASE HELP!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which line shows the first error in the solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. line 2 B. line 3 C. line 4 D. line 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it's A. or D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Line 5 is the error. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D is wrong, 24/3 should be 8 and not 21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is no way that it is A. The answer would be D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is nothing wrong with line 2. The error is the last line where they are dividing both sides by 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly as @Pawtpie said.

Thank you so much!

Line 1 through line 4 are correct. Line 4 is: 3x = 24 You are solving for x. Since x is being multiplied by 3, you need to do the opposite operation of multiplying by 3. That is divide by 3. You must divide both sides by 3 to find x. 3x/3 = 24/3 x = 8 This is the correct answer. The error in line 5 is that the left side of line 4 (3x) was divided by 3, but the right side of line 4 (24) had 3 subtracted from it. You can't divide one side of an equation by a number and at the same time subtract the number from he other side. You must do the same operation to both sides.
