Can someone please help explain this to me please? Tom receives allowance every week. He spends three-fourths of his allowance on food. Last week, Tom spent nine dollars on food. What is Tom’s weekly allowance? Write the verbal model, define the variable, write the equation and find the solution. Show your work.

@ganeshie8 I know how to do this but I don't know how to explain it, can you help me with this user?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Well I know how to figure out the total amount of money, I just do not know how to explain all the other stuff..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm could you show me the numerical version of how to solve it? I know how to do this roughly, but the version I came up with was wrong XD

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Lets call the weekly allowance is \(x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Since he spends \(\dfrac{3}{4}\)th of his allowance on food : \(\dfrac{3}{4}x = 9\) solve \(x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you to @beccaboo333 !

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Excellent ! and not surprisingly, the variable that represents the allowance is \(x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks XD
