@stacey835, Actually, that is not a great answer. Receptors are the cells that do the detection and the are connect to nervous tissue that connects to the brain.

afferent cells. they take information from a place (such as a touch sensation to skin) to the brain or spinal cord and the brain send them to the efferent cells to allow a response
