There are two terms of evolution: microevolution and macroevolution. Microevolution explains things like the wide variety in domesticated dogs, cats, cattle, etc, and can be thought of as evolution of populations with short times spans. Meaning evolution of things such as adapting to a new environment. Macroevolution is a grand-scale version of micro that looks at long time periods and explaining relationships among different species.
