Why is gold often found in a pure form in nature?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gold is an element that has its electron shells complete. It does not need to satisfy any unequal charges so it is found uncombined in nature. It does however form natural alloys with other metals like silver, copper and even platinum. It is also found as an impurity in pyrite and as veins in rocks, especially quartz. Gold ore is any rock in which gold can be extracted for a profit.
