The short answer is that it was the nickname given to the purge Hitler, aided by his SS and local Gestapo, waged against political opponents including Ernst Roehm who was the leader of the SA (the paramilitary "brownshirts" who acted as the street level army that the Nazis used to intimidate people) citing them as threats to the stability he promised Germany.
