What color do you expect to see when placing magnesium hydroxide into bromothymol blue?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Let's start with what bromothymol blue is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bromothymol blue is the indicator solution

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Mhmm that turns what color if what is present?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it turns blue in some solutions.. and i think yellow in others but im not totally sure

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Alright take a look at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromothymol_blue So it yellow if the pH is bellow 6 and blue if above 7.6. Simplified, it's yellow with acids and blue with bases. In neutral it will turn greenish. What is magnesium hydroxide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its a base.. so it would turn blue right?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Yup yup!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much!

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

No problem.
