Does the used of figurative language in a nonfiction text distort the reality of the subjectv

Is this an opinionated answer? Cause I believe that is doesn't distort the reality; in fact, I believe it enhances it. Giving metaphors and similes to what the character is seeing/feeling can allow the reader to compare and contrast. Also, imagery is HUGE, and totally needed. Without it, how could we tell what is happening. Then onomatopoeia, the sounds allowing you to understand what something sounded like, especially if the reader doesn't know. The only thing I can think of the sorta distorts the reality is hyperbole, but not that much, since we all exaggerate. Hope that helped :)
