OpenStudy (insa):

can someone explain vertical and lateral erosion of a river channel?

OpenStudy (paki):

"Vertical erosion" is when the depth of the river is greater than the width causing erosion to take place on the bed of the river... This is also when lots of water enters the river but not as much is exiting it..... and "Lateral Erosion" is the action of a stream in undermining a bank on one side of its channel so that material falls into the stream and disintegrates simultaneously... The stream shifts toward the bank that is being undercut.... @insa
