What is the area of a polygon with vertices of (-4, 5), (-1, 5), (4, -3), and (-4, -3)?
@kirbykirby
Please help. I would really appreciate it.
It helps to draw this:|dw:1401159216557:dw| I relabelled the vertices to reference the line segments after more easily.
Could you help me on finding the area? That's whats really stumping me. I am horrible at math.
You can first separate the figure into a rectangle and triangle: |dw:1401159534933:dw|
Ok.
So you can find the area of the rectangle first, and then the area of the triangle. FOr that you need to know the length of the sides. Would you know the length of \(\overline{AB}\) ?
That would be helpful, thanks :)
Isn't it 3?
And the length of AD is 8 right?
yes indeed! Can you use the same idea to find the length \(\overline{AD}\) ?
yes :)
So you need to use the formula for the area of the rectangle
So the area for the rectangle is 24
