I need help with this question, I don't understand it at all.... Point A, located at (-8, 3), is the location of the storage closet and point C, located at (12, -4), is the director's office. Find point B, the location of the art supplies, if it is (2/5) the distance from point A to point B.
\[distance formula = d =\sqrt{(x1-x2) + (y1-y2)}\]
Once you find the distance from A to B. Then figure what 3/5 of that would be.
I know how to use the distance formula I'm just confused about the 2/5 stuff lol
Well 2/5 * d is your distance from point B to the location of the art supplies.
Wow I feel stupid lol
Haha no don't be :p
So I just multiply 2/5 * the distance nd I have my answer?
Yeah ! Then you can get the coordinates of the location by the same formula given by @nelsonjedi and replacing X1 and Y1 by the coordinates of B.
Wait you confused me lol
Ok, i'll draw a picture for you |dw:1401195199058:dw|
So I use the distance formula to figure out the distance between points a nd c. Then after doing that I just multiply 2/5 * D, then that's it? I'm completely done?
When you do you do that you get the distance from A to B, then you need to find the coordinates of B.
So then what does multiplying 2/5 * D give me?
Like I said that gives the distance from A to B. This is the second part :3 You apply the formula of the distance from A to B and from B to C, which will give you a system to solve for x and y the coordinates for B. Like this : 2/5 * d = sqrt ( (x+8)² + (y-3)² ) and 3/5 * d = sqrt ( (x-12)² + (y+4)² )
You jsut need to solve that system for x and y and you're done ^^
just*
I know it looks complicated but it's really easy once you start :p
Where did you get 3/5 from lol?
It's d - 2/5*d the distance from B to C. And on second thoughts it is kinda complicated, where did you get this problem from ?
Its on my worksheet for geometry lol
Are you supposed to find coordinates by calculus or maybe just draw point B on your sheet, cause that would be much simpler.
All it says is find point b so idk lol
It is actually simpler than that (There is certainly no calculus) Find x1-x2 and y1-y2 The x position of the art supplies is 2/5 of the X difference The y position of the art supplies is 2/5 of the Y difference
