Name an historical or political consequence monotheism appears to have had on a society in which it has arisen. In answering, be sure to provide evidence for that consequence. It may be helpful to consider how a polytheistic faith in the same environment would have yielded different results. Make sure your essay is framed in terms of an argument, in which you prove your point about how one of the world’s monotheistic faiths caused the consequence in a culture that you claim it did. It must be a consequence that occurred before 1500 AD.

If it were me, I would suggest the great confusion surrounding the meaning of Monotheism. Attempts at enforcing the definition resulted in every conceivable definition of God. This, in my opinion, resulted in great confusion and eventual Atheism as many became discouraged by the confusion. No god was easier to understand than whatever god was being taught most generally.

So, what is Monotheism?

1) One God, and somehow The Son and the Holy Spirit are confused in person? It's really three, but we DEFINE it to be only one? This definition denies the literal resurrection, so there are other resultant problems, here.

2) One God, but working in such close concert with The Son and the Holy Spirit, that they are one in purpose and effort, but the identity is not confused. There are three, but only one is God. This is often mistaken for Polytheism, but that is incorrect.

3) Atheism. Does zero count as monotheism?

The Church through the Dark Ages went to a lot of trouble to enforce its definitions. If the Church had taught the correct, simple, and rational 2), rather than the confusing and incorrect 1), this enforcement would not have been necessary. Many more would have lived. Unfortunately, in concert with what I wrote above, this is NOT differentiating Monotheism from Polytheism. It's two different types of Monotheism.
