it's just what number multiplied by itself equals the number. for example the square root of 49 is 7 because 7*7=49.

I'm sorry, this does not pertain to your question, but I freaking love your avatar! Team Grimmie \|/ Anyway, The square root of 2 is approximately 1.414213562, but yes, it is irrational, therefore does not have an exact square root.
