Tricky question, I would go with: 'A special character'

My source is from personal experience I guess. In the general regexp, there are 12 characters with special meanings normally called special characters or metacharacters, these characters being: 

The backslash '\'.
The caret '^'. 
The dollar sign '$'. 
The period or dot '.'. 
The vertical bar or pipe symbol '|'. 
The question mark '?'.
The asterisk or star '*'. 
The plus sign '+'. 
The opening parenthesis '('. 
The closing parenthesis ')'. 
The opening square bracket '['. 
The opening curly brace '{'.

Plus let's not forget about the digraphs and trigraphs in C code.
