why did tokugawa shogun keep japan isolated from 1603 to 1853?

I'm not an expert on this but I believe wasn't it due to multiple reasons? Didn't the Japanese view Europeans the same as the Europeans viewed them? Barbaric. I also believe it was because of the spreading of Christianity and This Shogun was very traditional so he expelled all Jesuits because they were becoming too influential.
