A ground wire is required for all appliances. It is a safety measure that will, if by chance the hot wire is allowed to touch the metal cabinet of the appliance, cause the fuse or circuit breaker to operate. If the ground wire (the green wire) is removed, the appliance will still work but if the hot wire is allowed to touch the cabinet, the cabinet is now "hot" and if a hand is placed on the appliance there is a chance for electrical shock and possible death.
